Services for Legal Professionals
Access
Legal practitioners may apply for access to the Law Courts Library's collection on a "user pays" basis, in accordance with the Library Rules [PDF, 20 KB]. Please note that access for legal practitioners does not include borrowing rights.
To visit the library to use its resources, you will need to complete
an
application for an Access Card.
The Access Card enables you to enter the secure floor which houses the Law Courts Library, and to browse/copy items from the collection.
Access is available for one day, one month, or on a financial year basis.
If you lose your card, please make a written request for a replacement. There is a $81.90 fee to replace a lost card.

Payment can be made by electronic funds transfer or credit card. A surcharge of 0.4% is applied to credit card transactions.
Borrowing
The Law Courts Library primarily serves judicial officers of NSW courts. Legal practitioners may browse the collection and photocopy relevant materials after being granted access, however borrowing rights are not included.
Document supply service
Please note that the document supply service is currently suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Library can copy and supply material from the collection, excluding selected materials such as the rare books collection.
Payment must be made in advance. When a request is made, Library staff will confirm that the item can be supplied and then issue an invoice.
Payment can be made by credit card or electronic funds transfer. A surcharge of 0.4% is applied to credit card transactions.
Judgments
From 1 July 2019, the Library offers the following document supply service for unreported judgments:

Other publications
The Library offers the following document supply services for publications in the library collection, including law reports, journal articles, book chapters etc:

Charges and turnaround times comply with Australian Interlibrary Resources Sharing Code (ILRS) standard rates.
Charges for the supply of library material include GST.

- contact details
- name of item / publication information
- the level of service required (e.g. express)
- copyright declaration
Under the
Copyright Act 1968 (Cth), requests for all material except unreported judgments must include a copyright declaration.
If you are making the request as an
individual, please state in your email:
'I require this copy for the purposes of research or study and will not use it for any other purpose. I have not previously been supplied with a copy of this article or other work, or the same part of the article or other work by an authorised officer of the Library.' |

Officer of the Crown, please state in your email:
'I, [insert name], acting for and on behalf of the State of [insert state name], hereby request you, and authorise you under s183(1) of the Copyright Act 1968 to make a copy of the material specified below for the services of the State of [insert state name].' |
